Wildlife to See When in Peru

Peru is such a diverse and interesting country to visit, there is so much to see and do in this gorgeous country. If you are a fan of wildlife as well, then this is the perfect country for you to visit next for a holiday or getaway. Many people associate llama and alpacas to Peru, but there is really so many other amazing animals and unique animals that you can see while on holiday in Peru. Because a large portion of the Amazon Rain Forest is in Peru it is home to many different species of animals that you may not see elsewhere. They also have the Andes Mountain range that goes through the country, providing another unique and completely different area for animals to reside in. Needless to say, Peru is one of the greatest countries to visit if you are looking to explore and see new and precious wild life.

Peru’s unique geography is what aids in it being one of the best places to see unseen wildlife. The country has rainforest, mountains and beaches. This means that you can see all types of wildlife in one visit that you may not being able to see in other parts of the world. For example, there are over 1800 different species of birds alone, some of them are very rare and cannot been seen in any other part of the world. Many of these rare animals are sadly going extinct, but the Peruvians are working hard to help the animals. There are over 50 protected wildlife reserves throughout the country that help the animals live away from the threat of man. Here are a few of the beautiful and interesting animals that you should keep an eye out for when you are in Peru.

The Andean Condor

This is one of the largest birds in the world, as well as the heaviest, it has a wingspan of up to 3 meters. It can often be seen taking flight in the early light of day. It is best to see the bird in the canyons as this is where it is often dwelling.

The Jaguar

While Peru is not the only place you can see this gorgeous animal, it is worth trying. It resides in the Amazon but is a somewhat elusive animal and you may have to be patient to see one. Look for them on river banks as this is usually where they are spotted. If you are able to see one you will not be disappointed as they are one of the most beautiful “big cats” in the world.

The Amazon River Dolphin

This is an absolute must see if you are planning to visit the Peruvian Amazon basin. Here you can see the “pink dolphin” a true spectacle of the Amazon. Due to having very translucent skin and capillaries that are close to the surface this dolphin appears to be pink when it gets excited. While here looking for the pink dolphin you will spot numerous other colourful birds and animals as well.
